Good read that. Thanks Pete.

None of these bikes is available here in Britain - probably because of Euro emmission laws.

The DRZ400, KTM LC4 and XT are all that's left of the general purpose Big Thumpers in these parts.

Shame :(

So what happened to:

Aprilia Pegaso
CCM 644 DS Trail
BMW F650GS and Dakar version

I think you need to make a list Alan

CCM fits the bill, but isn't mainstream like the above mentioned. Is the new Pegaso in the shops yet? - I can't comment on this bike as it's only been pictured in Magazines as far as I know. The Beemer is too heavy, weighing in at some 50 lbs more than the KLX which is the heaviest of the bikes tested..

Things certainly seem messy with Aprilia. I hope they survive and continue develping new and distinctive bikes. Their problems came with the collapse of the Italian scooter market.
In one of my other lists I quote an industry analyst who predicts that the Chinese are going to blow the Aprilias and Piaggios of this world away in the next 5 years.

Every cloud and all that means that there might be a few bargains around if these firms go under.

Aprilia are now part of the 4th largest bike producer in the world
The Italian scooter market will never collapse, it will fluctuate like all markets do.
It will take far far longer than 5 years for the Chinese to even make a decent foothold in the European marketplace.
If industrial analysts really knew about business they'd all be running their own multi billion dollar businesses themselves

I herd it was helmet laws that killed the EU Scooter biz, fact or fiction? :Yen:

The Italian scooter market was killed by the helmet law, aparently, Gucci and Armani don´t make no helmets, so the image of the elegant man in the fine cut suit would be ruined by the helmet, as would the fine italian hotness with cute sandals would get messy hair when running around downtown Piacenza with a bouquet of flowers in her basket and a helmet.

From the moment people start to have to wear a helmet, the fashion´s gone

Industrial Analysis is a multi billion dollar business. They're the smart ones, no risk money making.

Can't agree about the Italian Scooter Market. Italian economy is a mess - even Fiat nearly went out of business a few months ago, it's only a matter of time before they're gobbled up. Italian brand names will survive, but just like the British Motorcar Industry (new Jag is just a Mondeo after all) it's all over for Italian bikes I fear.
