The new XTs have been around for a few months now and owners are beginning to report various faults with the finish. The latest being poor engine paint.
Comfort is great and no reliability issues have appeared. Some have reported that a new ECU or ECU adjustment improves the low throttle fuelling.
While this bike's performance is good and its handling is frankly outstanding, the bike's cosmetic finish is quite dreadful.
Do Not Buy This Bike if you are easily upset by:
1 - Easy Peel(tm) Decals.
2 - Easy scratch plastics.
3 - Poor quality, official aftermarket items.
4 - Poor condition on delivery.
5 - Suspect engine paint.
6 - Poor quality fasteners.
7 - Rust prone areas.
In my opinion, this bike cofirms that Yamaha build the shoddiest bikes.
Note: The finish of a bike is covered by warranty for two years and by the Sale of Goods Act for six years.

I think it was TWO that did a review of big nakeds in the latest issue and the big Yam came out bottom, mostly for it's finish/build quality again.
Kawasaki came out top though, which surprised me.

In my opinion the finish of Kawasakis is the better than any other make. Only the ER500 seems to be poor. ZRXs seem very good as do their sports bikes.
The XTs finish isn't in the same league as the DRZ or the Honda XRs. I don't know enough about KTMs to have an opinion about them. But I reckon finish wise the list would be:
1 - Kawasaki
2 - BMW
3 - Honda
4 - Suzuki
5 - Yamaha

Until I had a drop, and so on, my 950's finish was lovely, very lovely. But the 400 has been treated harshly in it's little use and has evidence of it.
No matter what you may hear, the orange'uns aren't half as nice. Fit and finish seem good on them all though.
Had a good chance to compare yesterday morning. :D:

Don't get your bike wet Pete, or all that plating will start to fur up quicker than quick thing :)
The XT's lousy cosmetic finish isn't unique and remember this, mine has had my special winter preparation and won't go all mankey inspite of being ridden on salt and all sorts. You will recall, I was under no illusions about the quality of the Yam's cosmetics right from the off.
Truth Spot: Euro made Jap Bikes are much more poorly put together than Jap made Jap bikes.

how true, the mechanic at the dealer where I bought the Transalp has said the same many times, and the fall in quality goes from stickers to important engine assembly

My Transalp is showing no sign of deterioration. Exactly as it was as new!

I should bloody think so, sitting in the garage with it's feet up waiting for it's next polish. :p:

No. Cos they never told me and Phil what time they were going to be there.
Or even if they'd changed their plans and stayed down Cupid's way.
So we don't know any more than you do Pete.

The XT is made in france, if it had been made in Japan would there have been all these problems? i think not!

John is right. The XT is made at the MBK factory in France, the engine is brought there from the Morini factory in Italy.
Mind you, it could be worse .... it could be Spanish:lol:
